Anybody out there interested in folk music ? When Adam was a lad, I used to sing in a folk group, and they were great days.

We regularly go over to Ireland, and one of the things I enjoy most is the live music in the pubs.

If you like Irish music, go to

http://tedmcgraw.com/recimages/Irish_clips.htm

and click on any of the recordings there.

All Around My Hat, Black Velvet Band, Fiddler's Green, Gypsy Rover, I'm a Rover & Seldom Sober, Jog O' Punch, Lilli Bulero, Maids When You're Young, Never Wed an Old Man.....

While i was downloading some music I came across a tune by a band called Pentangle, I think it was called Light Flight and was used as the theme to the BBC seies Take Three Girls ( Very Good It Is Too!!)Maybe not pure folk but I think Maddy Prior sang it.

I'm a great lover of Magna Carta, they've made some great albums over the last 30 years and are still going strong

Yes I remember Pentangle, and I used to like Steeleye Span's rendition of Gaudete

The young lady in Pentangle was Jacqui McShee (with Bert Jansch and John Renbourne on guitars), and I have to agree with Philo that Sandy Denny had a stunning voice.

When Fairport first started, Judy Dyble sang vocals, joined later by Ian Matthews. When Judy left and was replaced by Sandy, the duet vocals didn't work as well, and Ian left the band.

Strangely enough although Fairport have never had even a top ten hit, Ian Matthews had a record at no.1 (for several weeks) within a short time of leaving Fairport, after he formed Matthews Southern Comfort and recorded "Woodstock".

Not a bad swap!

great track,so was the Joni Mitchell original ( and CSN(Y?). Makes me think, how many cover versions can you think of where the cover was as good/successful as the original? A starter "a little help from my friends" Joe Cocker/Beatles.
Should this be a new thread, if so, anyone know how to move it?

Peterpan......just start another thread for cover versions.

I've just come back from a fantastic weekend at Shrewsbury Folk Festival. It had a real eclectic mix of artists from Kate Rusby to the Peatbog Faeries via Paul Brady, Crooked Still, Show Of Hands, Salsa Celtica, Bellowhead, The Wailin' Jennys and much much more.

Was at the Rhythm festival earlier in the summer where Iain Matthews actually played.

Joni has a new album out shortly btw.

I like Christy Moore and the bands he's been in eg Planxty, Moving Hearts. I like Steeleye Span, the Dubliners, Ewan McColl (I know he's passed away but I've heard him and Peggy Seeger together) ,Clannad, Capercaillie, and loads more.I used to live in Edinburgh and go the Folk Festival each Easter and Danny Kyles singaround in the Acoustic Music Centre when the Festival was on.

I also have a Karine Polwart CD and a quirky Irish compilation called 'pub party' that I bought at a local garden centre (!) with Finnegans Wake and a toe tapping seashanty. I like toe-tapping 'all join in' songs the best.

Here in Exmouth there is an group of singers called The Shantymen who do lighthearted vocals and raise money for charity. There is also a group of acoustic players that do a good version of 'Fields of Athenrye'

Candy said in her profile that she would like to meet Billy Connolly. I met him at the Acoustic Music Centre over 20 years ago and when everyone went for a bar break I got him to play a song of his that I like.

all the best

Christy Moore was on at Cambridge FF a couple of years ago, since then I have been playing catch up and picking up his cds when I can. The live ones are fun, particularly the inbetween song chat.

Karine Polwart was also there and her first cd is superb. She used to be in a band called Malinky.

There is a lot of great music out there by "folk" acts and people shouldn't be put off by the stereotypical socks, sandals, wooly jumpers, pewtar tankard real-ale drinking image. We have been going to Shrewsbury Folk Festival and it now features on our social calendar...regardless of who is on.
