I am considering buying a Bose Wave radio , particularly now they have a DAB module. I would be interested to hear if any Zoners think they are good/bad/indifferent. Particularly interested to know if it has an internal aerial. Went to my local Bose stockist to be told that one had to order them direct from Bose - can be returned free of charge if not liked but seems a lot of bother.

They're not cheap, either, are they?

I agree S de R, at the price I've seen quoted they must give absolutely outstanding quality! Unfortunately I've never actually seen or heard a Bose in action.

Very expensive. You could buy the Denon M35 for less and from the reviews it should sound better.

A cheaper alternative, which is also supposed to sound as good if not better, is the Creative Soundworks 740 Radio - £155. FM but not DAB.

I don't have one, but I've read a number of favourable reviews.

Hi, i have bought the Bose radio as my other half has some hearing problems and while very expensive its been brilliant,I have also bought the DAB module which has made it even better.

I recommended it to my father in law who looks for value for money as he and my mother in law are very hard of hearing and he bought the basic model and is also very delighted with it..

There are other DAB radios that are very good and could be considered, but dont buy a cheap one. I always price compare and regularly find EMPIRE DIRECT to be the keenest, they are the people that Norwich Union Insurance use, they are not the biggest but deliver all around the uk,,you will be aware you can only buy the Bose from Bose... no bargains sorry

Strange BOSE must be magic!
All technical (HiFi Mag reviews) do not rate the sound quality.
Do BOSE have some specific hearing aid quality?
I am really puzzled
I have never listened to a BOSE
I have never seen a BOSE except in an Advert

I also bought the Bose sound reducing headphones, Great when travelling, gets rid of all that aircraft engine noise, coach road noise, or just other people noise. when in use it is just me & my chosen sounds. or silence as the case may be...

I bouught one as a Christmas present for myself. Since the power cable is the FM aerial, location seems to be crucial and I haven't got it right yet. The alternative is to use the indoors external aerial supplied. However, I consider that a bit unsightly.

I have played CDs on it gauge its sound quality. It is no better than my old Denon kit with its Mission speakers, but is much more compact and better looking.

Many thanks for all your contributions - the favourable comments from most of those who have one have prompted me to order one - on reflection one can't lose with a free returns package. SW I believe the DAB version is £499.

DAB is still noticeably inferior to FM in terms of sound quality. This may depend on where you live.

Bose is like B&O (do these names have something in common?): better design than sound quality. You don't always get what you pay for.

The problem with that is:

(a) people rarely admit that they regret buying something
(b) that effect is more marked the more expensive it was
(c) anybody who thought that it couldn't possibly be worth that price wouldn't have bought one.

So how, objectively, will you decide whether to send it back?

How much !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought I'd check - surely a radio can't cost that much? - and no it doesn't. Here's the BOSE website

The basic "WAVE® radio" seems to be £299 (which is more than I'd pay for a radio...).

The "WAVE® music system" with CD is £399

The "WAVE® music system - DAB" with DAB and CD is £499

Some others are as much as £999

My cousin's just got one with a CD - 'twas playing when we visited at New Year - however I didn't get a chance to try it out at larger volume.

BOSE is a remarkable company. The wikipedia article says that they even worked on cold fusion research! (I thought initially this was a joke but I conclude that it's true.)

Amar Bose is (was?) an unusual character - see this from the Wall St Journal of 1996 (PDF).

My last contribution to this topic. Again thanks to all who replied. Please note , however , I did not ask for advice on value for money. Also for those who think people rarely admit that they regret buying something they obviously don't know the people I do. My decision on returning will be made the obvious way - if I like the sound or not .

The biggest problem you will have when trying to compare the Bose is that of ascertaining what your signal strength is like in your region. We've had a DAB radio for some time (not Bose), so I read about it when first using it. Apparently the BBC transmit their digital signals (both audio and visual) at a low frequency, and this can result in certain areas not having a very good reception. It would be easy to mistake this bad reception for poor equipment, whereas in fact the equipment might be perfect!

we have a Bose Wave Music System which was a 'present to selves' last but one Crimbo. It has a single CD slot and radio with six AM and six FM memory settings-not digital though. They are a lovely looking item, very neat and tidy with only the one wire to the mains which also acts as the aerial. The rich bass sound is lovely, the unit sits very nicely in a corner and just needed to be twizzed round a bit to get best sound.Clock/alarm etc.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with dinnerlaydee - I have a Bose Wave radio, given to me as a present years ago, which I use as an alarm clock. It's OK for 5 minutes at 7 a.m. but I certainly wouldn't listen to it at any other time - it's bassy and reverberant, just like the old radiograms used to be.

Bit late on this as I am a recent joiner.

Agree with dinnerladyee. This is a great unit with adequate sound reproduction and the bass enriches this. It also means you can get good quality sound where ever you may be - inside or in the garden.

I also use my MP3 juke box as a sound source and thus have a complete system in a very small space.
Happy listening to Toxophilite
