We spend our lives on the run: we get up by the clock, eat and sleep by the clock, get up again, go to work - and then we retire. And what do they give us? A bloody clock.

What did you recieve? Was it something you really wanted?

buggered if I can remember, it made that big an impact. It was fifteen years ago.

Probably destroyed it, since I hated the job like poison.

Along with others, I received a glass bowl. Not sure whether that was to commemorate completion of Sizewell 'B' or our leaving (a big bunch of us left at the same time). Anyway, said glass bowl got a chip out of it a year or so back and I unceremoniously binned it. Like my leaving - without a tinge of regret.

Yes, in the sense that what I really, really wanted was to leave.

My husband ran a garage, and when he retired, the lads that worked for us clubbed together, along with our main retail suppliers, and presented him with a £300 voucher for one of the main DIY stores. Brilliant idea. We bought a water feature and a patio set, so now we sit in the garden, listening to the tinkle of water, and not a clock in sight. Bliss.

I remember now. I got a one pint pewter mug engraved with a picture of Sizewell 'B'. Still got it. One of my sons put it in the dishwasher - that was a mistake. Came out looking a mess. The dishwasher powder played hell with the silver plate inside and out. Ruined it really. Not averse to using the mug.

I think we had a choice of a mug or something else. I disremember what the something else was.

You guessed it, I received a clock. Not bad as it was in a wood case with engraved plaque, however; they misspelled my name. It took 3 months before the replacement arrived as they had to get another purchase order approved by headquarters before it could be redone. I worked for the government.

Woof - that is so funny, but why am I not surprised?

My colleagues clubbed togethe and presented me with a cheque for a weeks holiday. Knowing my likes and dislikes they had also produced a folder detailing holidays that I would like. I was attatched to a gp surgery and the people there collected and gave me a cheque for spending money. A very worthwhile gift and one my hubby and I really appreciated.

In 1999 when I retired from the Local Authority after some 26 yrs, I got a nice letter from 'Human Resources' which also asked me to return my identity badge. In May this year when I retired from the Ambulance Service after nearly 9 yrs, I got another nice letter from 'Human Resources' Thanking me for my contribution in a difficult and demanding environment.

. I just retired from work on Friday. Got so many presents I was overwhelmed.Chose myself a digital camera from my employer - was allowed to pick something up to the value of £75 and not a penny more - and I couldn't pick something more expensive and pay the difference!.

I got a few very pretty candles, tealight holders etc which will come in very handy when I can't afford to put the lights on in the winter!

Seriously though, I did get some lovely presents and cards. Gotta have a clear out now to make room to put things. That was one of my priorities anyway cos when you're working, things just get shoved in anywhere just to make the place look tidy.

I retired last week. My work colleagues gave me a very generous token for Marks and Spencer. My boss, for whom I have worked my socks off for the last 10 years, gave me a nylon shopping bag! I just need to figure out what to do with the rest of my life now.........

When I left my job everyone was very generous and I got lots of lovely things but one of the traditions of the place I worked was that anyone leaving or retiring also got a gift from the 'left over promotions cupboard.' A few days before I had a peep in the cupboard and decided that the likely gift would be an umbrella. I gave considerable thought to a witty and gracious speech based around umbrellas only to be presented, on the day, with a paperweight and pen and pencil set! I thought fast on my feet and the speech went well (everyone laughed anyway - always a good sign)
