Can any of you expats suggest a good location?

We are trying to decide where to go for our first long stay winter break next year (January, February and March hopefully) but are struggling to agree on the best place to go. It's 'somewhere in Spain' vs 'somewhere in the Canaries'. My husband's coming down heavily in favour of the Spanish option as we could drive down and have our car with us for the duration but we're a little concerned about what the weather is going to be like and we'd welcome advice or suggestions from any of you ex pats out there please. We know that we can't expect hot weather anywhere in Spain in the winter but would like it to be mild and hopefully sunny so that we escape the worst of the UK winter gloom. So where could we go in Spain that has the prospect of decent weather and plenty to keep us occupied?

We will be looking for 'home from home' accommodation with heating and English TV channels so any help with that also appreciated.

Gran Canaria is the perfect place to spend the winter months. The climate in the Mogan area is the best of any of the Canary Islands with sunshine virtually every day

Strange you say that the climate on the south of Gran Canaria is supposedly the warmest. The exact same is said of Tenerife in the area of Los Cristianos, and Fuencaliente in La Palma is also claimed to be the best. Then again I have heard from the locals in the most southerly town in the Canary islands, La Restinga, El Hierro that theirs is always the warmest, because it is further south than the rest. I wonder who is right, perhaps someone should visit all the islands and isletas, take a whole winter doing it and let us know the result........Happy

We spent a couple of hours in Mogan in December 2008 when our cruise ship "Black Watch" called at Las Palmas. We liked Mogan very much and wished we could have spent more time. Mogan is definitely on our list of places to go for a relaxing holiday. The weather on Gran Canaria in December was hotter and sunnier than the other islands we visited on the cruise. Going again in July 2009 on "Braemar" and looking forward to seeing Mogan again. We have neighbours who have spent this winter nearby at Puerto Rico. If I could winter abroad I would choose Gran Canaria.

I think it is a matter of opinion.Just because I like somewhere does not follow you will. The same with wine/films etc. Have been to the Canaries once and my wife would not go back if you paid her.I think with the low cost in the far East this is a better option, get away from the Euro. The weather is better and it is MUCH cheaper.Shades

I did not say Mogan is the warmest (though it probably is ( I said it has the best climate of all the canary Islands with only 3 or 4 rainy days a year.

You say get away from the Euro? The Euro is doing fine its the pound you need to get away from it is devalued against all currencies : not only the Euro! Thanks to Gordon

I only mentioned the Euro because if you are paid in Sterling and you go to a "Euro" Country you have to get their currency(Euro) somehow.Of course the pound is not very good against some but not so bad against others.Take your choice.Shades

Benidorm is full of brits all year round. Go to 'holiday lettings' to look at accommodation. Or Goa. I'm going 1st Dec to 1st March. Self catering £1230-00 for 3 months. flat sleeps 2. Flights about £400-00 each. Guaranteed good weather.

I live in Tenerife for most of the winter and before deciding on a place to live 10 years ago we lived all over the island including the non holiday villages and decided on Costs del Silencio where living is definately cheaper and it is FLAT The council are at the moment spending a lot of money here amd upgrading the roads and pavements
When I am here I walk a lot so the Heights in Los Christianos is daunting for a fit young adult and is a challenge for me
Ask around and I would expect a 1/2 bedroon apartment could be rented at about £100 a week for three months BARGAIN

What a brilliant thread! I have really enjoyed reading this and shall keep looking in.

I love this Saga site there is so many interesting forums.

Tommo what a wonderful thing to do. I can not think of any thing I would rather do than to spend the Winter months in Goa.
Beautiful place, lovely people and every thing we need and much more.

Which part are you staying in?

Is there plenty to do to keep occupied in Goa? Not interested in shopping though!

I have been to Goa 3 times and the last time was about 6 years ago.
We love it and there was no time to shop or sunbathe!
It depends what you like to do of course.
My OH and I hired a motor bike and enjoyed exploring. It was fun but a bit white knuckle some times.

Hi
I have been really interested in this topic>We are thinking of going to tenerife for a few months next year. When i have looked at the prices on the holiday sites it all seems very expensive for us. We are going out to Tenerife in March for a couple of weeks and will be staying at a hotel (all inclusive) and want to have a look round while we are there.

Any advice would be appreciated. I suppose i wont get a response cos you are all in TenerifeShades

We are just coming to the end of our usual 8 week winter stay in Tenerife, Playa Las Americas and I´d be happy to help you with any questions you might have.

We rent an apartment and there are some very good ones around but I´d recommend that, if possible, you go and have a good look around some before you commit yourself. Photos on a website can be very deceptive. We have just rebooked for the same apartment next year as we have found it very comfortable. It´s worth bearing in mind that an apartment which might be OK for a fortnight´s holiday might not be so good for a longer stay when you will tend to spend more time in and around the apartment. Not so much a holiday as just living in a warmer climate for a while.

Thanks for your reply. We are going to tenerife next week and will have a good look round as you suggested. Looking on the internet the apartments all seem so expensive . How do you manage with the weight allowance on the plane when you go for longer than two weeks .Shades

I get through quite OK packing for 3-4 weeks.
The heaviest thing in my suitcase now which used to be in hand luggage is my toiletry - come - medicine cabinet bag !
I always carry 3 pairs of shoes and at least 4 paperbacks .
Then there's my clothes Cheeky

I always fly Monarch, 20kg allowance in the hold, plus hand luggage.
