I used to holiday in Southport as a kid; was last there about 15 years ago and didn't seem to have changed greatly; seemed very pleasant. If not Southport what about St Anne's (probably more expensive?)

Can anyone offer an insight?

I wouldn't even think of St. Annes . Very nice to visit for the day, along with Lytham but not to live.

Neaj--had no idea that you lived in a place called Southport--knew it was Queensland of course.

I grew up in Aintree Liverpool and Southport was a regular day out--also later when living near Wigan--often drove out in the evening in the summer or for a meal--or when we had our daughter--would go there for the shore

Not sure how much it has changed as not been other than a couple of hours on our way home from a wedding 13 years ago

keep sayng it's time that I revisited--3 changes of train though--bit off putting--could drive of course!

Major Tom--once you retire you get free transport all over greater Merseyside--but--train--inc underground railway--ferries---from beyond Southport as far as Chester Happy

Very flat, Southport!

I used to live there but got out 25 years ago and don't regret it for one moment. Whilst it is known as a "pretty seaside town" with its "elegant" Lord Street, that's about it. The sea is often conspicuous by its absence ... the sands used to be covered by the parked cars of the day trippers ... an exciting event was when someone put washing-up liquid in the Lord Street fountains and the place was covered in bubbles ... events such as golf at Royal Birkdale, the July Orange Day Parades from Liverpool, etc. used to bring the transport system to a halt ... it is oddly placed geographically which means that if you want to go somewhere other than Liverpool, it's miles to the motorway ...

On the positive side, it has a mild climate and it's flat.

I still have friends there and they say it gets duller by the year but I have to admit that I've not visited it for a few years now because the last time I did it looked greyer and duller than I ever remebered it.

I now sit back and wait for all you Sandgrounders to shoot me down in smoke!

Guess it depends what you want from life but before I "retired" to a place suggested by others I'd visit it a lot, stay there at different times of the year and do my research really well!

Southport promenade has been much improved recently, Lord Street has an excellent selection of shops and the park and ride is great..... £1 to park at the end of the Prom near to Morrisons and free bus into the centre, where you can spend all day before catching the return bus from Lord Street. Afraid I can't pass an opinion on what it's like to live there though. Happy

As a Merseysider I visit Southport regularly, it is afterall only around 10 miles from where I live about 20 minutes on public transport. My wife and I like Southport though I have heard that it can get quite rowdy at night, there are a lot or bars and clubs. There is a high proportion of retired people living in Southport and plenty of cultural opportunities but they are no substistute for an established network of friends and family.

Southport is part of Merseyside and if you live there your 60+ travel pass allows you to use Merseyrail to Liverpool, Wirral and Chester as well as the buses which all over 60's can use. Liverpool and Chester both have loads of opportunities for leisure. There are frequent buses to Preston and other towns in South Lancashire. Sefton council also has free swimming passes for the over 60's.

It all depends on what you want. If you think that Southport may be for you book a holiday flat in low season to give the place a test drive. Explore the local area and get know the place at different times of day. I have met several older people who regret moving to Southport so make sure before you go there or anywhere else on a permanent basis. Southport is flat and older friendly but it can be lonely if you don't make friends easily. My advice to anyone thinking of moving to anywhere is to remember your friends and family who can't move with you and imagine life if you hardly ever saw them.

Lytham St. Annes may be "nicer" but I think that Southport has much more to offer.
