I recall visiting a tea plantation a long time ago in what was then called Ceylon
The dried tea was placed in front of a huge fan housed in a long wooden building with teak floors which blew the tea along It's length.
This was the method of grading and the tea which ended up the furthest from the fan was classed as the poorest quality (it was like dust) I am not sure that it was exported.
Having recently opened a tea bag, there was the very dust.
Was the tea bag therefore marketed to to sell a product that would not have sold in a packet?
Do any members still buy loose tea?

No.

The tea bag is up there with the microwave in 'great inventions', IMO.

I buy loose tea, I use it on the first pot of the day. I have a tea diffuser (I think that's what they're called) so I don't need to use a tea strainer and it's not hard to dispose of the used leaves.

The rest of the time I do use tea bags, which are convenient, but not quite the same.

I do think that the marketing of tea bags was the biggest piece of kiddology ever.
and that the previously unmarketable "tea dust" really is the dregs

Did anybody see Paul Heiney tonight, "Countrywise" I think the programme is called, on ITV? They showed a "tea plantation" in Cornwall, might give a whole new meaning to the name English Breakfast TeaBig Grin.

And the quill pen probably allows much more decorative handwriting than the biro... but... Wink

Tea is my favourite drink and I never leave home without a big cuppa in the morning -PG tips

I also drink herbal teas - lots and lots of different flavours, there are so many.

When visiting my Mum she does use loose tea and I am sure it tastes better. When I visited her and she had tea bags I was a bit upset. The loose tea and my Mum go together and when she had tea bags for a change it was all a bit strange!
Not sure

I too am a great tea lover andI have had the occasional speciality tea and on a recent holiday tried them every day. They were in bags which may disprove my theory that only poor quality tea gets stuffed in them.

(some tea expert member might just put me right)

One distinction I have noticed is that though I do not take "ordinary" tea without milk and sugar, I find that some of the speciality teas are pleasant just as they come

I drink builder's tea first thing in the morning, made with a tea bag, but the rest of the day I tend to drink green tea or oolong using a tea diffuser like Samsnan. I also drink herbal teas and rooibosch. Actually, let's face it, I'll drink almost anything as long as it's not coffee.

I drink Earl Grey first thing, Green tea in the afternoon, Mint tea after dinner and Camomile before I go to bed in the summer. I alternate between loose and tea bags. I'm sure the loose is better, I must get a diffuser to save the hassle of the tea pot remains.

Oh dear, dare I say it! I cannot abide tea in any shape or form. I loved tea up until I was about five years old, and then one day I had an upset tummy, and in my mind the tea was to blame. I have never touched tea since. Even now, almost sixty years later, looking at a cup of tea, especially when milk is added, makes me feel nauseous, and I have to look away!
