Not sure whether this is the right place for this question so don't be surprised if you see if somewhere else on the Zone as well.
My youngest son has a birthday coming up soon. He is a forester and has requested a book on identifying trees (can you believe that? Wouldn't you think the Forestry Commission would send them on a course or something?). I have bought some small books suitable to keep with him in the forest but would really like to buy him something bigger to keep at home. Anyone got any reccommendations?

My OH left school at 14. back in 1957.
He went to train at the forestry commission on Lady Bakers Estate in County Durham.
The head forester of the estate gave OH a little hardback book and told him to read it regularly as he would ask questions on it.
The book is called 'THE OBSERVER'S BOOK OF TREES AND SHRUBS' Compiled by W.J.STOKOE.
OH believes that this book may be updated every so often.
IF you cannot still obtain it you maybe could try the local second hand bookshops.
He still consults that book now for his work occasionally and he is now 66.
We would be very interested to know if you had any luck with this.
Good Luck for your search.

Thank you for your suggestions. Will do some reserach on Amazon, where I tend to do most of my book buying these days (even though I live close to Hay on Wye). Will let you know which I decide to buy.

Hi Sweetsue...
I think if you google the name of that book and the author there should be a few places but I'm not sure whether they are all 2nd hand or not.
Hope you find what you are looking for..
Regards Dizzy.

You may already have found an appropriate book, but just in case you haven't (or indeed if you want another!), A friend bought me a book on trees from a "remainder" bookshop - Trees in Britain, Europe and North America by Roger Phillips. Has photos of all leaves, berries & blossom of all types of trees. Is softback but large format, so not one you can stick in your pocket!
