In this area we seem to be plagued with a red clover like weed with little yellow flowers which grows all over the garden and which can only be contained, not eradicated, with weedkiller - digging up is no use because if you leave the tiniest bit it grows again. I have a tinned fruit can which I have cut the top and bottom off which I place over the weed and spray into it , it makes a good guard so that the weedkiller does not go on to other plants. It might be a useful tip for anyone treating other pesky weeds.

PS If anyone knows what the weed is and has got rid of it I would be pleased to know.

Sounds like common or garden trefoil and I use Wilkinsons weedkiller to kill it in my lawn.

This is your problem:-

Name: Black medick
( lupuline, nonsuch clover, yellow clover )

Latin name: Medicago lupulina L.

This lawn weed has had a real resurgence this last couple of years.

I stand corrected. We havn't had the pleasure of your new weed in this neck of the woods. Good luck with your efforts.

Oxalis Corniculata fits the descripton, red clover like leaves with yellow flowers. It is classed as a weed very invasive in flower beds and lawns and very difficult to eradicate with weed killer. Passing a flame over the weed before it flowers will help control the spread.

I have had a look at both those suggestions on the internet and the pictures they show are not what we have. It certainly is very invasive - I could have a whole garden of it very quickly if I left it - so maybe there are other varieties that are not shown in the pictures. If I take a photo how do I show it to you - that would be best if I can do that.

This is the one I am having problems with, the faster you kill it or dig it out with a daisy fork the faster it propagates itself.

I live in Colchester and know exactly the plant you are describing. I don't what it is called but it is an absolute pain in the garden. As you say it multiplies like mad and is very difficult to get rid of. My flower beds seem to be worst affected. The only thing I can say is that it is bulbous and if you just try and pull it out you will leave the bulbs behind and it then starts growing again. Dig deep and try to get all the little bulbs out and hopefully it won't come back. I'm still having problems though it just seems to pop up somewhere else.

I know which one you have Marsh Marigold, and we have that too but it is not such a problem.Ours does not have bulbous roots. I have taken a picture and put it as my forum picture - not very good, but it might show you what I am talking about HappyHappy

Hi Emma have looked at your picture and does look different to the one I was describing. The weed I have got is a nuisance enough on its own. Poor you with that one and another you are trying to get rid of, good luck! Sorry I can't help with identifying yours.

If your avatar is the plant in question Emma I am sure it is an Oxalis and I am still pretty sure it is the Corniculata or Creeping Wood Sorrel ,Common name Sleeping Beauty some varieties have green leaves.

as long as the weeds are monocotyledens you can use a 24D weed killer containing fenroprop mecroprop Dicloroprop or one containing MCPA these should shift it treat as instructions might take a few treatments but it should kill it good luck

Thanks everybody - I will persevere with the Roundup, the real problem is that the seeds are in the soil round here and the conditions seem to be ideal for the plant (stony soil, ideal for propagating) so I am on a losing streak whatever I do, but I least I can try to keep it under control. Happy gardening all!
