Hello, I am a volunteer Guide Dog puppy walker, now onto my second pup. Are there any other Guide Dog puppy walkers out there?

Cheers

Tom

Apparently not.....

I'm thinking about volunteering for it. Any problems or things I should know that they don't tell you about on their website?

It'd be nice to know before taking the plunge....

I couldnt do it, as there is no way I could give the dog back after living with him for months.

Valid point Gilliand, and one to think seriously about. I suppose it might be made a bit easier by the fact that I'd be going into it in order to help a blind person to "see", rather than to meet my interest in having a dog.

Are there any puppy walkers out there that can offer advice or warnings?

Hi Chalk, I have been puppy walking for guide dogs for about 18 months now and really enjoy it. I agree it is hard to give the pup up after a year but you know it is coming and that the pup will hopefully go on to help somebody.
My first pup, Lara, that's who is in the picture went to Newcastle last week to start work with a blind girl. lets hope it works out for both of them. Hope to find out more this week.

I think most things are covered in the website. You should fill in the forms and send them off. You would then get an interview from one of the local supervisors. Where about are you?

Let me know what you decide.

Good morning Tom, thanks for the information.
I guess it must be really satisfying to know that your work has resulted in a young girl getting the independence that a guide dog can bring.

I'm down in the south east, near Canterbury. Any further and I'd get wet feet followed by a French accent. Still thinking about it at the moment, as I'm a little bit concerned about what might be involved. I've never had a dog, didn't seem right with us both going out to work - I hate the idea of a dog being little more than a fashion accessory locked up in a house on its own all day. Now that I've recently retired though....

Is the utter inexperience in four-legged matters a disadvantage?
