just planted some corms bought from TV gdning channel. Followed instructions ie ensuring hollow side uppermost level with compost surface. Placed them on tray with water. hoping to soak the compost slightly. Should I have watered from the top or not at all? & if I need to water how often ? Have placed them on a window sill facing east with great hope. My second attempt. Last years was a failure.(Placed them in garage). Should I invest on a heated tray? My husband who was a keen gardener had a greenhouse & heated trays. The g/h I left behind when I moved & the heated trays just disappeared. Am really trying to make the best of my gden, which is too big anyway but that is another story. Thank you for your help.

Please when planting your begonias tubers ignore the old idea of leaving the top of the corm level with the top of the soil. The whole surface of the tuber if in contact with the compost can form roots and if any water did collect in the top hollow this will be drawn out by the covering of compost.I am no expert but have grown them for exhibition for about 30 years. Blackmore & Langdon are the experts and they say " it is essential to bury the corms". you only need about an inch or so but you will get a much better root system and a better plant. You can see some of mine on my little website.

I have just re read your post and it sounds as if your are being rather heavy with the water, they only need to be slightly moist until they get going or you can rot the new roots as they form. I will not be starting mine for 3 or 4 weeks yet.

Thank you Laurieuk for your advice. Will put some more compost over the exposed tops & go easy on the watering. Very interesting site. wish could do more with my garden but I have such bad stony soil & a fragil back. Which is a pity because I have quite a lot of space. Thanks again.
