Is he dead yet? If not, why not?

I gather from this that Phil hasn't been deaded yet. I am sure I heard, just after the death of Norman Painting, that 'they' were planning to bump Phil off around the middle of January?

I do miss the occasional episode, but I would have thought the old chap's deceasement would create waves of such tsunami like proportions that one would have to not listen for several weeks (months even) to not get a sniff.

Anyone know what's happening?

No, and I was wondering the same just yesterday. Jill can't have been in it for weeks either. I've missed quite a bit over the last few weeks, but definitely haven't heard anything about Phil's demise - and sad sap that I am, I get the daily email updates!

I get the Archers Addicts Newsletters every month. Straight into the bin usually. He's not been mentioned either, not that I've heard anyway. Maybe they are planning something.....spectacular? Or are they just gonna let him die in bed Not sure? Just have to wait and see.

The speculation on the Archers messageboards is that something is going to happen soon. There is a day out planned for Jill, Aunty Cardboard (who has been silent for yonks) and Peggoi Three senior members of the cast who are close to Phil would indicate they going to send him off with full honours.

There's also a campaign to bring back the Doom Music for that episode even though Vanessa Whitburn, the editor, has banned it.

Last night's plug for tonight's was something like: tomorrow Jill gets a nasty surprise at Glebe Cottage.

Phil has had one or two mentions this week, a sure sign in any soap Hmmm. Tonight's the night? I wonder if Ruth will be allowed to say: Oh nooooooo? I'll fall about if she does.

Haven't time to check what they are saying over on the Archers boards. An unwelcome spell of child minding looms Upset.

I've warned the family that there will be an exclusion zone around the vicinity of the kitchen radio - no one is to phone, arrive or otherwise distract me from the serious blubbing i'm expecting: I'm about to place a new box of tissues next to the radio, in readiness.

The creppe arm bands and bows are ready, I've ordered the flowers for the floral tribute...

I hear the portents of doom.

Go on, SW, do Phil proud, he deserves it (and a place on that history programme: 100 objects that shaped the world)

Didn't they do it well? Perfect writing, perfect acting. Very poignant - brought a tear to my eye, I must confess. I first started listening when I was in the infants' school. Phil was in it then, of course, and played by Norman Painting. We had moved to Nottingham from the countryside and I hated it. The Archers kept me in touch somehow.

I wonder if that's the first time an episode has ended with something other than the theme tune? A perfect end. Anyone else listen in last night?

Should have known it was imminent: (1) all the mentions of Phil - probably more this week than the whole of last year - and (2) the vicar's back in the storyline. I remember a D day veteran saying they knew it was the real thing and not a rehearsal when the padre turned up. Missed that clue.

Just listened to the last bit of Friday's again. Steamed my glasses up a bit, but...oh well, end of an era, I suppose.

On the archers message board someone has posted: A friend of my parents was found dead by his partner in his chair holding a glass of malt whisky at c7.16pm with the radio tuned to Radio4..

Says it all, really.

PS: they've got an alleged troll, btw - JumboJosephII. I thought I'd share that with you Cheeky.

I thought it nicely and tastefully done too.
It would not have been good to have a more dramatic end since Mr Painting is already dead, difficult for friends and family to listen to I would think.

I was just listening to tonight's episode (Phil's funeral) and have howled my eyes out. Am I the only soggy person on SZ?
